[Being the saviors of the world came with certain duties, and one of them was to grab potentially world-ending artifacts from places that they probably shouldn't be.]
[One of those happened to be a 'haunted' castle. And it also happened that there were only two people free for the job.]
Don't worry, my cool beauty. If it gets too scary, you're more than welcome to hold my hand. The Great Zelos will protect you.
[The doors had barely locked behind them, and Zelos was already treading on thin ice. At this rate, Raine was more likely to kill him than the house.
[It makes sense-- Raine can't really go on her own, not if there's any risk of monsters more threatening than the average bear. They'd be on her faster than she could fend them off. Still, she'd absolutely love to explore the castle at her leisure, stopping to lay hands on every piece of stone that's gone astray.]
[Instead she has Zelos calling her his cool beauty.]
[...Well, she can still lecture him about the architecture.]
Oh, honestly, Zelos, wasn't 'Professor' enough?
[He may be lucky she's still distracted by the stonework of the entryway.]
I'm still a little dubious about the reports of what's going on here.
For a beauty of your standard, a simple 'Professor' is nowhere near enough.
[Someone please punch him.]
[Like Raine, he takes a good look around the room, although he's not focusing on the architecture. The large door they'd came in through had closed (and locked) behind them, and they appeared to be in a foyer or entry hall of some sort.]
[The architecture looked pretty old, too, for all that Zelos knew about it. The walls of the room were made with stone, and there was an antique-looking rug covering the floor. Cobwebs were everywhere, and it didn't look like anybody had been here for a couple decades, at the least.]
C'mon, those reports were all exaggerated. We get in, fight a few monsters, grab the thing, and get out. Easy.
[Raine is too far away to smack him. She settles for an aggrieved exhalation, and for bending to examine the rug.]
...Hm. This is a very old pattern. Older even than the state of the rug suggests.
[She straightens again and heads for a corner, waving her staff overhead into the lowest point to catch some of the cobwebs and examine those, too.]
Certainly it doesn't look like anyone's been here in a very long time, but monsters should have disturbed some of this, in theory. Unless they're immaterial...
[Raine trails off, a troubled, thinking expression on her face as she brushes cobwebs off her staff.]
Or maybe we lucked out. There probably aren't any monsters nearby, which just made our job a lot easier.
[And, almost as if on cue, the temperature of the room drops to a good ten degrees cooler. The rug that they are both standing on starts shaking, and several vases on a far shelf fall to the ground.]
[Okay, maybe that shakes Zelos, but he's going to do his best to keep calm.]
And the old man booby trapped the place before he died. Peachy.
When, that you can recall, have we ever been that lucky?
[Also luck is a finicky thing; but if it does exist then Zelos has definitely just jinxed them.]
[Raine twitches, and turns to look at the remnants of the vases.]
Those looked old-- honestly.
[She crosses to them and bends to examine the shards, turning one over in her hand with a moderately mournful expression before she starts to examine the shelf, running one hand over it in the search for hidden catches.]
Mm. I don't think this was trapped; even if it was, it would be an odd trap that simply dropped pottery. I think something else must be at work here.
for ruinsprofessor!
